It’s never too late to pursue something that delights you. Just ask Mary Firestone.

Mary took pottery classes in high school and college, and then followed other interests as an adult. When she rediscovered her joy for working with clay and decided to take some pottery classes at a community center, her enthusiasm was stoked.

That was 20 years ago, and her avocation has been her vocation ever since.

Clay sparks her creativity. “I love everything about clay — from the feel of it on my hands, to the versatility of the medium, to the finished projects,” Mary says.

Other parts of her life led to a signature design for Mary, who is a Master Gardener and a lover of botany. She imprints leaves in many of her decorative and functional pieces.

Mary applied to Indiana Artisan as a test to learn whether her work might be considered among the best in the state. Another goal was to build a wider reputation for her work.

She is eager to promote herself as well as Indiana in the arts, and she is equally eager to share her work with fellow artists and collectors.

“As a person who feels compelled to create, I feel fortunate that I can make a living from my pottery,” Mary says. “I especially enjoy sharing it with my collectors and patrons.”
