Kris Busch started working with clay as a teenager, and something “just clicked” for her when she took a college ceramics course. She was the resident potter at Indiana University’s Creative Learning Center for 10 years, and since 1995 she has been working in the Bloomington studio she shares with her photographer husband.

The functionality of her art is important to Kris, and she strives to make pots that people will feel drawn to use daily.

“I take inspiration from the feedback I get from people who use my pottery,” she says. “There is nothing more gratifying than to hear that one of my mugs is so cherished that the owner must wash it every day so they can start each morning with it. It’s important to me that a pot is not only visually appealing but also functions well.”

Kris’ studio borders the Hoosier National Forest, which also provides inspiration for her work.

She throws each piece of her work on the wheel, then alters or adds to it to change the form. The pottery is then high-fired in a reduction kiln to 2,300 degrees. Each firing takes about 12 hours to complete, then another 24 hours to cool.

“I’ve lived in Indiana most of my life and have taken a strong work ethic from the area,” Kris says. “For me, making pottery is a way of life, not a job.”

Kris has worked very hard for the last decade developing a unique and marketable glaze palette and at improving her skills as a potter. As an Indiana Artisan, Kris feels her work as a ceramics artist has been validated.

“I look forward to making connections with other artists and galleries across the state,” she says.
