Art applications are reviewed by one jury panel which evaluates on four criteria outlined in the application guidelines. As applicants complete the application, they might imagine being one of the panelists, reviewing well over 100 applications in a two-day period. To have your work noticed in this crowd, you want to be clear how exceptional your work is. You want to be specific about why it is exceptional. And you want to do that succinctly. Tell your story. Compelling stories are the ones panelists remember when discussing every application. But remember that a story that's too long is one that bores the reader. Nearly every artist has a great story to tell about themselves and their work. Successful applications tend to be ones that make the point clearly and quickly.
The breadth of the artwork behind the Indiana Artisan brand is extensive. It includes fiber art, metalwork, jewelry, pottery, painting, photography, outdoor and indoor sculpture, leatherwork, and a host of other functional and decorative items. Because of that, you might find some application questions somewhat repetitive. The goal is to provide all artists adequate opportunity to create a compelling application. Please take your time and complete all the questions as thoroughly as you can.

Value-added food producers need to complete the application so that two different jury panels can review your product. Only one panel, the "Packaging/Labeling" panel, will review your application online. This panel is comprised of retailers, dieticians, ServSafe instructors, current or former Indiana State Health Department staffers, and others knowledgeable in packaging/labeling/food retailing. After reviewing your app, the group will meet and evaluate your sample in terms of how it is packaged and labeled, determining if it meets state health department guidelines and requirements and assessing how marketable it is in terms of its appearance and price points.
A second panel, one comprised of chefs, culinary instructors, dieticians, food editors, and others with sophisticated palates, blindly review the samples (out of their package and in small, nondescript "tastes") as part of the "Taste/Texture" panel. This panel references your application for details regarding ingredients. Are some or all Indiana-sourced? They also review the applications to learn the applicant's story. How is the product made? Where is it made? Why is it made? The application tries to draw these answers out of food applicants. Tell your story as part of the application!
